An Ubuntu community legacy: debian-community.org

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

Years ago I started as Debian user, but when I tried to help with the project I had a lot of problems: stoppers, not enough help, etc. It was a very bad experience for me :(

Someday appeared Ubuntu, I started to use it and so easy (and quick) I became part of the project. Today I’m a LoCo contact in Ubuntu Chile (our LoCo team) and Ubuntu member :-)

What is the big difference between Debian and Ubuntu? THE COMMUNITY! It’s incredible the feedback who has Ubuntu from their users… a happy user quickly becomes in an passionate!

I talked about this “problem” with many Debian Developers during Linux Conference Australia, and they told me that Ubuntu do a good job with the people and the idea would be “recover” their people.

Today I’m surprised! I read in Holger’s blog about debian-community.org

Debian-Community.org is an effort to give something back to the community that has a great share in making Debian the universal OS that it is. Many people contribute to Debian: obviously the developers and package maintainers, but also translators and artists and everybody who files bugs or helps someone else on a mailinglist. If you want to be part of the Debian community, but don’t want to become a developer or maintainer, Debian so far didn’t offer you much in reward…

A very good beginning!

Launchpad & teams

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

“Launchpad is a collection of services for products in the open source universe”, a powerful tool that helps the Ubuntu community and its release cycle (bug management, specifications, sprints, etc).

I’ve some questions about LP:

1. What are the benefits to use Launchpad?

2. What’s the idea to use Launchpad for teams management? ATM I’m only can approve members, create polls… For example, I need to contact (email) all members but I can’t do it :-(

A good idea would be if someone can teach to teams administrators how improve the LP use.

Thanks for your comments,

A LP user :-)

LoCo Resources: Templates for Drupal, phpBB2 and Moin

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

Since one year approximate I’m the Chilean LoCo Team’s services maintainer. I spent a lot of time to find an appropriate Ubuntu template (based in Human theme), but finally I got them.

Currently we are using the same style for our website, wiki , forums and planet. Cool!

As I know that other LoCo Teams can need it, I decided to share our Moin, Drupal and phpBB2 templates. Soon I will add to the list our planet theme.

Enjoy them!

UPDATE: Also you can find these templates (and more) in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Templates.
